Proven Treatment Options for Rotator Cuff Tears and other Soft Tissue Injuries of the Shoulder Joint. It Is Now Possible For You To: Accelerate the healing of your rotator cuff injury. Relieve rotator cuff pain to a manageable level. Reduce the amount of scar tissue from your shoulder injury. Regain lost Range of Motion by reducing the atrophy in your injured shoulder.. But before you decide on a treatment path, an understanding of the three major stages of the healing process is critical. With the right knowledge and the right treatment options, you can accelerate your recovery without the fear of re- injury or setbacks (which unfortunately, happens to many people - we will explain why further down the page). Step 1: Reduce The Initial Inflammation. Inflammation is the body's natural response to a shoulder injury and is a normal part of the healing process - helping to reduce tissue infection in the early stages of injury. Swelling, pain, heat sensation, redness, and loss of function are the main symptoms experienced. The combination of cold therapy and static compression is the gold standard in medicine for minimizing tissue damage and reducing inflammation after injury or activity. It serves as a critical bridge into the next phase of the healing process. Step 2: Enhance Blood Flow to the Injured Soft Tissue. Tendons, ligaments, cartilage, and some muscle fibres are considered dense tissues. ![]() Reverse Shoulder Replacement for arthritis and massive rotator cuff tears Surgery with a reverse prosthesis can lessen shoulder pain and improve function in shoulders. BillyTheTree Jewelry - Magnetic Jewelry, Jade Jewelry, Sterling Silver Jewelry, Luminox Watches, Tifosi Sunglasses & Much More. The following article provides in-depth information about surgical treatment for rotator cuff injuries, and is a continuation of the article "Rotator Cuff Tears.". A cuff is an extra layer of fabric at the lower edge of the sleeve of a garment (shirt, coat, etc.) covering the arm, at the wrist. The function of turned-back cuffs. As a result, they naturally receive limited blood flow and this is precisely why injuries to these tissues take so long to heal. The challenge is, how do you effectively increase blood flow to these tissues? Rigorous exercise is out of the question as it will lead to further injury. Heating pads merely provide a surface heat and do not effectively penetrate into the dense tissues. Therapy is helpful, but that only happens a few times a week. It is through the blood the body carries the nutrients, oxygen, and antibodies the injured tissues need to repair and rebuild. Research shows that electromagnetic energy is a very effective treatment for stimulating blood flow to dense tissues such as tendons, ligaments, muscles, and even portions of cartilage. This dramatically improves the healing process. Electromagnetic energy is an energy waveform that is absorbed by dense tissue (muscles, tendons, ligaments) and not absorbed much by less dense tissue (fat cells, skin). This increased blood flow speeds up the healing process, clearing the area of toxins and excess fluid build up, thereby reducing inflammation. This process is simply known as BFST. This is a very important tool for complete and fast healing! Step 3: Recognize That Healing is a Process. With dedication, the right tools, and the right information - you will achieve your goal of a sustainable recovery. A combination approach of cold compression therapy, deep heat treatments, and functional movements will make it happen much more quickly. Healing takes a comprehensive approach and will differ from person to person. If you have questions, we welcome you to call our office toll- free at 1- 8. Continental US), or Internationally at +1- 7. What Exactly IS the Rotator Cuff? Most of you are reading this because you suspect you have a rotator cuff injury, or perhaps you have already received a confirmed diagnosis. Either way, you are most likely interested in learning; what are the steps I need to take to properly heal it? We receive questions like this on a daily basis. The approach we take is based on years of experience and based on sound, scientific principles. We discuss these approaches in- depth further down the page and throughout the rest of the website. Before getting into that however, it is important to understand the characteristics of the rotator cuff and the role it plays within the shoulder. Though many people refer to the rotator cuff as a general area of the shoulder, your rotator cuff itself is a group of 4 tendons located at the top of your humerus. These tendons are called the subscapularis tendon, the supraspinatus tendon, and the teres minor tendon. These tendons come together to surround the front, back, and the top of the shoulder socket acting as a 'cuff' to connect your humerus to the rotator cuff muscles. When you contract the attached muscles (subscapularis muscle, the supraspinatus muscle, the infraspinatus muscle, and the teres minor muscle), they pull on the tendons causing the shoulder to rotate up or down, back or front, in or out; hence the name 'rotator cuff'. These muscles, along with the teres major and the deltoid, keep the shoulder's ball and socket joint firmly in place and are responsible for stabilizing the shoulder. If any of the 4 main rotator cuff tendons or muscles become injured, the stability of the shoulder is greatly affected. This is why it is critical to take a comprehensive approach when managing rotator cuff tears and strains. What it Really Means to have a Rotator Cuff Injury. Rotator Cuff injuries can and do persist for years unless treatment is properly addressed. Anyone can experience a rotator cuff tear, not just professional baseball and football athletes. Shoulder injuries are quite common, often the result of a quick blow to the shoulder joint or through years of common movements such as swinging a tennis racquet or golf club. Regardless of how the injury happens, a shoulder injury is painful and the joint can feel very unstable. This type of injury can also impede your ability to perform many common tasks that you probably took for granted before the injury. A serious rotator cuff injury will usually interrupt your sleeping patterns and this condition can also lead to back and neck pain as well as overall reduced movement in the upper body. This is a big problem for many people when they are trying to heal this injury, as it can often mean they have to take time off from work. If this sounds like you, then you know how important it is to heal your rotator cuff injury quickly and make sure it doesn't happen again after you get back to work and start living a normal life. Recovery can take a long time but proper healing is essential to regain strength and get you back to the activities you enjoy. Complete recovery can be easily delayed by re- injury to your rotator cuff muscles or tendons. It is almost impossible to keep from re- straining the muscles because even in a sling your shoulder can still move. It's just not possible to stop everything and rest the injury properly. What ends up happening is we continually re- injure the shoulder through our daily activities further setting back our recovery. Rotator Cuff injury sufferers will always be at risk of re- injuring their shoulder because even when the pain is gone the shoulder is still not fully healed. But, when the pain disappears, that's when they start using their shoulder normally again even though it isn't fully healed. It's just not possible to stop everything and rest the injury properly. Everyone has demands that make them keep going and when we are active we prevent the shoulder from healing completely. Obviously, it delays the healing process, but what's worse is that every re- injury and additional healing cycle increases the amount of scar tissue that builds up in the area of your original shoulder injury (the supraspinatus muscle for instance). Scar tissue is hard, inflexible, and tough to get rid of. Scar tissue means that your shoulder will not perform as well as it once did and it makes it much more prone to injury again later on. The more scar tissue that develops, the more you lose the range of motion in your shoulder. Continuous re- injury and build- up of scar tissue makes it more likely that you will wind up with chronic pain, Frozen Shoulder or even arthritis (permanent damage). If you have inflammation in your shoulder or in the muscles surrounding the shoulder joint, it's very important to heal it quickly and completely. You must avoid the build up of scar tissue. If you don't, your shoulder injury may plague you forever. This is where pro athletes have the advantage. They use therapeutic tools to speed their healing so that they are 1. Even once they return to the sport, they use these tools constantly to heal any recurring tendon or ligament damage before it can build into something big. For professional athletes, having the right tools means all the difference. For the rest of us having the right tools should be just as important. A Rotator Cuff Injury Does Not Have to Persist For Months Or Longer. Here is Why It Does For Many. Rotator Cuff injuries can persist for years unless treatment is properly addressed. They are quite common, often the result of a quick blow to the shoulder joint or through years of common movements such as swinging a tennis racquet or golf club. Recovery from a rotator cuff injury can take a long time, especially when some of the less effective, traditional methods are utilized. This is simply because many treatments either focus on masking of pain or are too inconsistent to provide sustainable improvement. Cortisone Injections Can Cause More Harm Than Good.

This is the story of my son Andy Zorn Andy was born in 1982 and had a joyful life easily making and keeping friends. It was his mission to make. It's time we shift our thinking. We understand that de- institutionalization is not appropriate for all people suffering with mental illness. However, the government’s approach to increase the use of jails and prisons for those deemed unmanageable with mental illness is unsatisfactory. Jail and prison personnel are not equipped to handle the complex nature of this disease. If a person has a certifiable mental illness they should not be inhumanely treated for having this disease. In some cases, they are tortured by being put in isolation 2. The lack of social simulation is harmful regardless of the inmate’s mental status and studies have shown that isolation can have psychological implications. The mentally disabled are extremely vulnerable to this type of punishment. It can actually exacerbate their already fragile mental condition; they should not be dehumanized because of their illness. Mental illness is a disease of the mind and should be treated as such. We don't punish people because they have diabetes, cancer, etc. They are not disposable! They are human beings! It was those neglectful practices such as isolation that partially lead to the outcry for de- institutionalization in the first place. We feel that solitary confinement constitutes “cruel and unusual punishment. Constitution. An individual with severe mental illness requires constant professional care with a well- trained and compassionate staff. Our organization’s position would be to have all certified mentally ill individuals who break the law, committed to a long term mental health facility. A place where they can be treated with human dignity and receive proper medical treatment. Let’s bring back a new and improved mental health system to house these voiceless souls. Housing the severely mentally ill in a proper long- term therapeutic environment will protect them from inhumane treatment and the public would be safer. In addition, when the mentally ill are released from prison they do not have adequate housing. Thus, they wander the streets, break into abandon buildings for shelter, are taken advantage of, and use illegal drugs to self- medicate. Finding housing is always difficult for ex- offenders, but the challenge is even more acute for the mentally ill. We might be able to correct some of these issues, but change only comes with the support and demand of the citizens. If we want change, we will have to fight for it, we cannot hide from it. |
